Automotive data has been a valuable asset to the automotive industry for decades. In the past, this information was only obtainable from a dealership or service center. Nowadays, motorists can obtain their own automotive data by downloading it from various sources online. These sources exist so that consumers can have access to updated and updated equipment specifications and performance figures at a time when finding dealer-provided information might be difficult. In order for motorists to have access to their own personal machine data, automobile manufacturers have been often times missing the mark when it comes to providing owners with this important information. This has frustrated consumers who would like to know what they have in their cars, but are unable to do so because the manufacturer has not provided it. The lack of data in a vehicle is also a result of a lot of automakers being too strict when it comes to providing this information, forcing owners to resort having these values in an older car in order for them to safely know what is going on with their car. The auto industry in America has been booming over the years. In 2013, 16.5 million people in the United States were employed in the automotive industry. In the same year, these companies sold around 15.6 million cars and they all made a total revenue of $640 billion in sales in 2013. The U.S. automotive industry also has a large impact on the economy in terms of exports and imports; it brought $184 billion into the country and said that they exported about $91 billion through importers by 2013. Car data can allow users to learn about their vehicle's features and performance before even visiting a dealership or service center to get repairs or maintenance done on their car or truck (if it is still new). Such information includes the tire pressure, oil change date, and other similar information. Data can also be used to repair a car or truck by reading the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Repairing a car or truck using data is known as "using off-the-shelf software," and it is the most common method of repairing a vehicle because it is an economical and easy way to do it. Once an off-the-shelf software program has been downloaded, all one needs to do is plug their car into their computer and read out the numbers. By reading the numbers on the ECU, they are able to pinpoint where the problem lies in their car, so they are able to fix it. Some cars are older and need certain equipment in order for them to have the ability to gather data off of their ECU's. A majority of these cars have some sort of an OBD-II port that is located underneath the dashboard on newer cars, but some may have a different set-up. The OBD-II port is just a small connector that allows users to plug in a USB cable made for this purpose into their car which will then allow them to get information directly from their gears. cfa1e77820
